MEN’S SILVER IN THE NORDIC SKI SPRINT and IN THE NORDIC COMBINED MIXED TEAMS. ITALY SECOND IN THE MEDALS TALLY BEHIND FRANCE
Another day of competition at the EYOF2023, the European Youth Olympic Festival, with no less than seven disciplines on the programme today; again, many medals for Italy.
In Tarvisio, the women’s giant slalom was on the programme today, held on a hard and technical slope capable of inspiring the best athletes: it was an Italian triumph with Ludovica Righi, who thus added alpine skiing to the rich Italian medal table at EYOF 2023. Victory was already set up in the first run when the Italian took the provisional lead and then held on to it in the second run against the attacks of Sweden’s Moe Landsrtoem (silver) and Austria’s Nadine Hundegger (bronze), who were all within three tenths of each other.
The men’s individual biathlon over the 12.5 km distance and the women’s individual biathlon over the 10 km distance were held in Forni Avoltri. Pavel Trojer from Slovenia easily won the men’s race ahead of Michal Adamov from Slovakia and Guillame Poirot from France.
Among women, the gold medal was won by Germany with Julia Tannheimer. Silver to France’s Voldiya Galmace Paulin and bronze to Ukraine’s Oleksandra Merkushyna.
At the Nordic ski races in Sappada, the medals in the individual sprint in the classic technique were up for grabs today. In the women’s event, the victory went to Austria with Heidi Bucher, who left the Swedish pair Minna Mikaelsson (silver) and Maja Axelsson (bronze) behind. In the men’s race there was a new silver medal for the Azzurri with Federico Pozzi, who only had to admit defeat to Sweden’s Jonatan Lindberg in a very close race and photo finish. Bronze again to Sweden with Simon Nordlander.
In Planica (Slovenia), the last race in the Nordic combined programme included today’s international ‘mixed team’ challenge. The top step of the podium is for Austria with a splendid Italy that is silver. Third place for Germany.
Another great show with snowboardcross in Piancavallo. Gold and silver for France with Felicie Leicht and Lea Casta on the scoreboard and in the women’s grand finale. Bronze to Czech Karolina Sperlova.
Among the men, France again on the top step of the podium with Achille Leu ahead of Dutchman Daan Stam and German Felix Schwenkel
The first medals were also won in men’s ice hockey at the ice rink in Torreano di Martignacco, where the final for the bronze medal will be played tonight at 7.30 pm with the Germany/Finland match. The Italian team came sixth. Tomorrow the men’s podium will be completed and the women’s hockey finals will be held in Spittal (Austria).
Figure skating made its debut on the ice at Pontebba with the men’s individual competition (free skate), the final of which is currently taking place.
Meanwhile, the curling rounds continue in Claut ahead of tomorrow’s semi-finals and finals.
With two days of competition remaining in the EYOF 2023, Italy is second in the medal table of nations behind France (5 gold, 5 silver and 3 bronze) with 5 gold, 4 silver and 3 bronze medals.
